It’s difficult to think of a more melancholy place than a hospice for very sick children, but the work that they do for very ill kids and their families is incredibly valuable. It opened in 2008 and receives few public funds (like much of the hospice movement such as Macmillen Nurses). If you want to find out more about what they do then visit their website at Bluebell Wood Childrens Hospice.Their website says “Bluebell Wood Childrens Hospice offers care and support to children and young adults with a shortened life expectancy, both in their own homes and at our hospice in Sheffield.”
It’s build on the old Dinnington colliery site, which looked desolate in winter 2008, but should bloom into a pretty good nature reserve within a few years as nature heals the torn earth. The lake in the middle of the site is a bird sanctuary, with hides for waterbird watching (although their opening times are pretty restricted).
